Blessings of the Plaguefather - War Altar of Nurgle 14

Bit more progress:

As mentioned in the last post the plan was to have each third of the top plate to be different. The front  third is the wooden platform for the bell ringer, the right third is the 'deamon skin' and the left third is now done - the plan for this will be to create a 'pool' using water effects tinted to give an impression of depth (I hope). Some sort of warp pool/portal perhaps - hence the Plaguebearer arm reaching out...

All three thirds had the edging strip added which was then distressed/textured. Once that was on I could add more GS to the right third.

I attacked the cross bars with the dremel as they looked pretty crap before. After that they got a bit more texture to them as well.

With a bit of blu tac holding the bell ringer in place and a piece of rod joining him to the bell this is what the whole thing looks like at the moment:

Blessings of the Plaguefather - War Altar of Nurgle 13

In the last post I said I would next work on the Militia and Bunkers.

So naturally this post is about the War Altar.

Basically after getting it out after all that time of it sitting in a box I couldn't not get some work done on it.

I decided to take the jump and finally get the bell attached to the top plate and start detailing everything up.

The metal work on the upright sections got roughed up with the dremel.

The bell also got some more attention. I did some work on it previously but now I went to town on it with the dremel and added some other textures.

This included inside the bell itself.

After that I put everything together to allow me to put cross bars across and glue the whole thing into position. The top section is still removable to make things easier.

Once that was done I moved onto detailing up the top panel.

Still very much WIP but I think you can get the idea of what I am aiming for. Different textures which tie the top panel into the rest of the War Altar. Still need to do the final third, clean some things up and add some trim as well as other details like bolt heads to hold the planking down.

Above you can see how the whole thing will sort of look once finished. The front third is panelled as that is the platform for the bell ringing mutant.

Nice to get some work on this thing done for the first time in years. I will aim to get this top section all finished up asap while also getting on with some other things.

Blessings of the Plaguefather - Heralds of Nurgle 3

As promised here is the final post on the Blight King Heralds.

Only a short post is needed as there was very little that needed doing.

The two Heralds that I swapped the heads on required a little cleaning up and GS around the heads, the first of which I didn't bother getting a pic of as you can't see really what has been done. The second one though with the Daemon head I did more that is noticeable.

The only other thing I did was add a magnet and some brass rod to all five. These will allow me to swap them between the War Altar and 32mm bases. I won't bother doing the bases till I have the figures back from Sheep but I thought i'd add the magnets and rod now as I thought it would be better to do it before they were painted - minimise any chance of damaging the paint job.

Next up will be more bunker probably and getting on with the Militia heavy weapon teams.

Recalcitrant Daze - Another Day, Another Post.

Bit of a filler post today, mainly to keep the momentum of posting up.

I had a parcel arrive yesterday from Black Library. I found myself last weekend ordering a couple of books on the spur of the moment:

Nice book with some great pictures. Slip case is a nice touch but I'm not sure it was really worth £40 mind. I suppose that is what you have to pay for (GW) limited edition stuff.

Also picked up Garro as it was getting close to being sold out.

Not long ago I picked up these other two limited editions. Finally got round to reading them this week. Enjoyed both, the second is probably the more important story but the first had some nice insights and characters.

I've not had much time this week for models, though I wasn't completely lazy as I did get some moulds and casting done for someone...

Check out the Sales page if you are interested...

Last weekend I ended up paying a visit to Warhammer World. Nothing really to report but while sitting in Bugmans waiting for food to arrive I asked someone to take a pic of the new tattoo, keep in mind normally you would be seeing this 180 degrees to the pic...

I like eyes.

To finish here are some blogs which I recently started following:

The Autoforge

Ex Profundis

Hobby Time

miniaTEXTures

That'll do for now. Next up will be a final post on the Blight King Heralds.

Bunker Rebuild 4

Not been able to do any thing over the last couple of days but Saturday I was able to do a bit more on the bunker.

So I carved in some battle damage and added some details on the inside including a searchlight, a discarded broken knife, ammo boxes, spare weapons etc.

I still want to add a bit more to it before starting the second one.

Blessings of the Plaguefather - Heralds of Nurgle 2

Bit more work done on the Blight Kings to be used as Heralds in the Daemon army and to man the War Altar.

I decided I wasn't 100% happy with the level of corruption on the metal parts on the Blight Kings. So I took the Dremel to them to rough them up.

I also added more texture in areas using LGS, sand and other things.

The chap above now has his arms and head in place. Need to rough up the shield a bit and he will be done.

The second guy is done.

This one I was the least happy with. The staff doesn't look as good as I hoped, the left arm was a problem and I'll not sure I'm happy with it (or the shoulder pad). However most of all I'm not keen on the head one bit, I thought with a different head I may be able to live with the model as a whole...so I ripped it off and with the help of some GS I got another head (designed for a different Blight King) to fit...

While I'm still not completely happy with him I think I can live with him for now. I will have time to think on it before I send him with the others to Sheep, for now i'll tidy up around the back of the head and set him to the side.

On Big Axe I need to finish off the right hand 'weapon' - I see it more of a sign of office thing, Not sure where he puts it when he needs to use the axe, probably best not to think about it too much.

Scythe guy, decided to change the head. At first I removed the horns (just looked too much). But then decided to give him a hood which completely covered his head. However the first attempt was crap. The second attempt was not much better. So I cut the head off completely and after some cutting with the knife got a different head to fit. Prefer this one to the original one so I'm not too bothered the hood attempts ended so badly. Will need to clean up the back of his neck a bit and then he is done. You may notice I also removed the rock under his one foot, instead his base with have the rock sculpted on it.

Blessings of the Plaguefather - Heralds and the War Altar

So it was back in July that I last built a model (not including repairing a few Militiaman or the bunker) and it was December 2014 the last time I did anything on behalf of Papa Nurgle...how embarrassing.

Tonight's post bring both of those up to the present time.

War Altar of Nurgle (aka WAoN) 12

As mentioned in the post a few days ago one thing that I wanted to do over the next month or so was get the War Altar out to take stock of it and decide what I wanted to do.

I checked and it was August 2011 the last time I did anything on the WAoN. That is pretty bad.

This is how it currently looks:

At the rear we have the 'power plant'.

And at the front we have the main platform.

To go on there I have these two old classic Nurgle figures:

To go on the other platforms I have a number of Nurgle figures and Nurglings, for example I have a couple of the FW Plague Toad riders...

The magnetised Rot Cannon and Demolisher Cannon.
After getting it out I definitely want to finish this monster off.

So the first thing I will do it sort out that top bell assembly which means doing the bell and structure itself along with the top plate above the demolisher cannon turrets.

(New) Heralds of Nurgle 1

At the 40th B'day thing at Warhammer World I picked up a box of Blight Kings at half price (should have bought more, just for bits).

My idea is to use some of these as Heralds for my Deamon army. I already have four, but as you can take four in each HQ choice I can potentially field eight of the little buggers.

So I started putting these together over the last couple of evenings. It is a very nice kits with lots of options, though the bits are generally designed to fit one particular body so swapping bits between bodies needs a bit of work.

Starting with the guy who will have the most conversion work here are the current state of the 'kings.

I didn't particularly like either of the front bodies you get for this guy. I took the one I liked the most and made a few adjustments. Originally this is meant to have a tentacle thing coming from his stomach and have weird hook like flesh below his belly. Instead I did some GS guts inside and rounded off the belly with GS. Undecided on his right arm at the moment.

The guy below is stock straight out of the box, because he has a scythe. Why would I want to change anything?

The remaining three are early stages, bodies are together but I am yet to add the arms. Guy on right is going to have the massive axe, because a massive axe is awesome (blu tac in place at moment). The one in the middle is likely to get an axe and shield combo, though they don't fit that body front piece so I'll need to do some converting to get it all to fit. The fellow on the left is likely to get a staff/icon piece.

My plan is all five will not get bases just yet. All of my Heralds (on foot anyway) are based on rock bases. This was originally due to the first two being painted by Sheep many years ago and I needed to rebase them to suit the Daemon bases and the easiest way without damaging or ruining the paint job was to fix them to rock bases.

One of the original Heralds painted by Sheep on his new rock base.
Now with these guys I am going to be sending them to Sheep to paint. I am going to stick with the rock bases for three reasons - 1. it helps Sheep getting to all the areas to paint, 2. it matches the existing Heralds and 3. I plan to use these ones as multi-purpose Heralds. I will magnetise them so that they can either be dropped on 30mm rock bases for the Deamon army or be dropped onto the War Altar as travelling Heralds/Priests/Guards.

For example the Blight King which will (probably) have a shield and axe will be a handy Guard at the front of the Altar protecting the wizened priest:

That is enough for now...

If that has wetted your appetite for all things Bubonic check out The Convertorum who has been producing some excellent Nurgle models of late including some great looking Blight Kings (which I may have to blatantly steal ideas from...).
