Defensive Walls & 3D Printing 6

In the last post about the gun emplacement I mentioned I had ordered the prints for the last pieces of the Defensive Walls, namely the plinth pieces. I have also ordered  a print of the mounting plates. With no chance of success I also did a model of some rebar and I have ordered prints of it in two materials to see if I can cast my own pieces..
Anyway, while the Six Nations has been on the TV I got busy casting wall pieces. I knocked up a second mould to speed things up.

After a bit of time I ended up with this lot: I mixed in a small amount of black paint so that if the pieces get chipped you won't see white (thanks to Jake for reminding me to do it).

All that casting did get a bit boring, so I took a few of the prototype casts and did a test paint scheme.

I carved a Chaos star into the one panel, it matches the stars I have carved into some vehicles. Using plaster makes doing things like this very easy.

They have started printing my new parts so I am hoping i'll have them in a weeks time and I can get one with casting the plinths, more walls and trying out the rebar. Casting up all the mounting plates will be a ball ache even with doing them in sets of four.

For reference here are the models for the mounting plates and rebar.

The actual model I am having printed is 100mm long
There is unlikely to be another update on the walls till the new prints arrive - as there isn't much I can do till then which will be worth showing.

  1. These look great painted. The texture is actually what makes them look good - if it was smooth it wouldn't have that realism to it.

    1. Yeah I agree with that. For other jobs I am thinking of (such as vehicle parts) it won't work but for concrete the texture is spot on.

  2. Glad I could be of service, sir.

Looks good, can't wait to see a whole table of it!

Then you can come over to my place and do mine - and in Australia we're not buried under snow ;)

  3. I think you've done a great job so far! I like the modularity, and can see how it would be easy to make gun pits & enclosures as well as extended walls / barriers.

I also like that the plaster material allows you a degree of ease for additional modelling & detail. I've mentioned it before, but hte soft material will let you drill and conceal holes for magnets in order to hold the wall sections together if they are used as scatter terrain.

    1. It would be workable but I won't be bothering with the magnets, too lazy tbh. I will be building some sub assemblies to cut down on some set up time but otherwise i'll be leaving them as separate pieces.

  4. Faolan (Jake) - For some reason your comments aren't showing on the blog, i'm getting the email notification of them being done but when I come on blogger there appears to be no record of them!

    Very odd.

But in reply: cheers for mentioning it, even though I had done it previously I know I wouldn't of remembered this time till it was too late. While I know you are snow free in Aus isn't half the country flooded at the moment?

    1. Only the half that deserves it :)

And yes, I've noticed my comments disappearing as well on here. I'm not sure how you broke it, but, obviously, you broke it :D

I may have to beg for a few of those sections later on once you've got the kinks worked out!

    2. Well it worked this time. Are you sure you aren't deleting them later in some sort of drunken or sleep addled haze?

I'm sure something can be arranged later on.

    3. Completely sure, since I get maybe one or two beers a fortnight, tops, and only on Fridays :D

Naw, I post them up, and they either sit there all day or I post them up and go to bed. Damned if I know, but I do know that Blogrolls have been having an issue lately, so it could be inter-connected.

That, or more of God hates Australia. Or Americans. Or somethin'.

    4. Perplexing. Both FTW and Santa Cruz have had problems with their mass blog rolls so perhaps there are Nurglings in the system (like gremlines in the system, but with more mucus).

      And yeah, but who doesn't...?

  5. Also, had a great thought: Those lifting rings you've modelled (which look great btw) could be used to feed barbed wire through so that the walls can provide additional protection to the chaps behind!

    1. Most of the walls won't have the rings in place actually, they'll be a scattering to add interest but most I won't bother with. The rings are actually bought brass screw eyes which i glued into drilled holes. It'll get pricey if I add them to every piece.

  6. This has come together beautifully Matt, the paint makes the texture really work.
